The North African Region lies at the crossroads of three continents: African, Europe and Asia. The region's unique location gives way for widespread trade and travel. These characteristics make North Africa a region where the process of "cultural diffusion" is ongoing. Cultural diffusion is "spread of customs and ideas in new places." (Jacobs & LeVasseur, 2005) The location of the North African region near Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa, the trade of objects and ideas has transformed the region over the centuries. The close location of the once existing Islamic Empire has given way to the spread of Islam and consequently Islamic culture in the region. Another aspect that has contributed to cultural change is conquests that have taken place in North Africa, where ancient civilizations such as that of Egypt has conquered areas and other empires such as the French and British ones which have conquered countries of the region.
